The Cobweb, Marine Court

Postby jeremy_wells » Thu Jun 14, 2007 11:29 pm

Can anyone tell me anything about a place called The Cobweb? I believe it was some sort of dance hall or venue in the fifties and sixties. It was situated upstairs at Marine Court, St Leonards, I believe. I would love to know more about it and why it ultimately closed down.

The building is mainly residential so I would guess that noise was the reason for it's demise. It was also called the Witch Doctor at some stage. Jimmi Hendrix played there in the 60's also Davey Jones and the manish boys (now David Bowie). My father was a doorman there and various other clubs, Fiesta, JB club. I shall ask him what he knows.

I remember going to the Witch Doctor it was a really good place to go. With ultraviolet lights so you could never wear white! The used to have a gig on a sunday afternoon just for kids under 16. You had to be a member to go to the evening sessions. I can remember drinking rum and blackcurrent, coke and having a really good evening. I never saw any fights or drugs in those days but believe it went on.

The Move with Peter Frampton, Spencer Davis Group, Small Faces with Kenny Jones and Steve Marriot. Amongst others. It was the place that I first heard the record of the Stones 'Satisfaction'.

It was a real place for Mods.

Everyone tried to get in eventhough they were under 16.

Hi.
I am researching a book about youth culture and popular music in Hastings and understand that the Cobweb closed in early 1970 following a fire.
Anyone who has memory of attending the club and can spare an hour to discuss over a cuppa, please contact me on 01424 446404.
Thanks
Jim
