There is a set of steps down the cliff that joins West Hill Road with the seafront. Signed as Sussex Steps.

Does anyone know why these are closed and how long it will be before they are repaired. I assume it's because of subsidance.

There is no sign to tell you they are closed from the top end. You walk half way down and are greated by a fence in your path. Very annoying, but you'll only do it once

Yes, they were closed in 2002 when the bank collapsed as a result of the heavy rain and flooding. I used to use them for my daily exercise

Sussex Steps still shows up on the County Council definitive map as a public footpath. So it is a highway which they are responsibe for keeping open!! Presumably they continue to hope that nobody's noticed!!

What about getting them re-opened?

Pics show what is left of Sussex Steps from underneath. Looks like they will be lost if nothing is done soon? - not good as there is no other pedestrian access to West St L station. Would be a boon to have restored, given the large nos of people who have moved here but still have to commute to London.

We have just been notified of a planning application to build 2 x four bedroomed houses on the currently grassed over plot which seems to be only about 100 or 120 metres to the west of Sussex Steps (rough estimate) Apparently the developer has an engineer's report to say the cliff is safe. What I'm wondering though, looking out daily on the huge chunks that have detached already, is how safe the cliff will be if someone starts construction work including, presumably, digging and drilling for foundations?

It's a shame that they couldn't keep the plot as open space, given it's stupendous views. it's a great picnic spot in an area with no public open space, perhaps it could be promoted as part of a tourist trail? (Having just moved here I'm very impressed by this bit of coast).
