Hospital at St Leonards

Hi All

We are looking into a family who lived in London but had a daughter in the hospital at St Leonards in the 1901 census.

Does anyone know if there was another hospital apart from St Helen's Workhouse, or would that be the only one?

The family were Boot Manufacturers, so it is possible that they had enough money to put her in a private hospital.

Many thanks.

Buchanan Hospital Springfield Road St Leonards? Closed in 1998(ish) now redeveloped as housing. Was a maternity hospital in latter years but prior to that I understand it was a general hospital.

Incidentally I think St Helens Hospital would be Hastings rather than St Leonards.

There was also at that time (1901) the East Sussex Infirmery - on the sea-front site now occupied by the White Rock Theatre. Although this, like St Helens, is strictly speaking in Hastings, the border at the sea-front is/was the road leading up from the pier so although Buchanan is probably more likely, I wouldn't rule the East Sussex out in your research. I believe the hospital actually closed around 1912, though the theatre (or pavilion as it was then known) didn't open until 1923.

Hi

Thanks for the information. Following a bit more research, it seems that the place was called The Auckland Cripple Home, any ideas about that?

By the way, I have forgotten my password so I had to register again, could Admin let me know my password please?

Cheers.

Glynn ;)

Right

Yet more information has come to light.

It seems that the Cripple Home was in Marylebone in London but they took their girls to "Auckland Building" for their holiday by the sea.

Anyone know of this building? Does it still exist? Any information gratefully received.

Thanks.

Glynn

By the way, anyone interested in Norfolk history/family history, I could probably help them. ;)

Hi There was Fern Bank too, but I don't know quite where it was, but I think it was above the Gulf garage as you went up Old London Road, somwhere near the bomb shelters on the left_ _ _..

Hi Glynn:
It might be an idea to contact the Hastings and Rother Family History Society (Secretary: Linda Smith - Tel: 01424 437493), who might be able to help with your query about St Leonards-on-Sea.
Just an idea. Hope it helps.

Hi
I have started a thread along similar lines to this one. Did anyone here find any answers as to where Auckland Buildings stood or is still standing?
Thanks Dave
