Railway Cottages Bo-Peep

Postby Barry » Fri Jun 20, 2008 2:38 pm

Hi
My sister is tracing our family tree and we have a relation traced to the Railway Cottages at Bo-Peep junction. He worked on the Southern Counties Railway and lived at 150 the Railway Cottages at Bo-Peep junction. Does any one know if the cottages still exist? If so is there a Post Code?
Thanks in advance
Barry

Hi Barry

There are still railway cottages but I don't think they would have ever gone up to 150. Are you sure the number is right? I will have a look later as that's not too far from me and I fancy a stroll.

As suspected, 110 is the end of the line (pun intended). Are you sure about the address?

My 1926 Pike's Directory has the numbers 140 to 224 for Railway Cottages_ _ _
There are some house still there but after 1972 the numbers of the houses decreased from 30 ? to 14..presumably some were demolished to be replaced by MFI and some new homes_ _ _I think that if you try Google Maps you will be able to see for yourself_ _ _.

The numbers are correct, my family lived at 152; in 1881 thy changed name and numbering from Southern Counties to Bopeep railway cotteges; mine was renumbered from 152 to 12; the neighbours are all the same so I know its not just moving house.

I knew someone who had worked on the railway and bought their house in West Hill Road, and mistakenly thought these (140s numbered) were the old cottages.

However, I now realise the cottages are atop the northern cliff created when the railway cut away the slope.

The earliest block of cottages are numbered 145-152 (as per 1975-6 map), an empty plot, later cottages pick up with 209 ... two semi-detached groups of 4 then groups of 2 up to 224, then allotments.

The occasional numbers on google satellite are 146 (old block) and 150 (2nd new block 213-6), but the word from India makes these a little dubious.
