Where is this Picture taken in Hastings?

Postby KBooth » Tue Sep 22, 2009 11:50 am

Hope someone can help identify where this judges postcard photo was taken.

Apparently taken in the very early 1900s.

Is it the pier? St Leonards Pier? Or Something completely different?

Hmmm, tricky one! Doesn't look like either pier to me. I am guessing it is the entrance to the public baths at White Rock.

I would love to show it off in our gallery if we can be definate about the location. I have approval from Judges to show their postcards on the site so no issues there.

Anyone else have any different ideas? Can anyone confirm my guess?

Thanks for your reply!

After your guess we looked into pictures of the baths and it does seem to be a very good match. It seems as though we're looking at the Gentlemen's baths.

We found it hard to find a picture of the baths like this one, without the snow though. They were either from a distance or just happened to be in the background so we may be wrong.

Yes, this is definitely the entrance to the Ladies White Rock swimming baths, I have quite a few pictures of this. Why not take a look in my book 'Hastings A tribute to Sidney Little' where you will see the baths then used as a cinema for a short period of time.

I think you will find that the original photo is of the Gentlemen's baths if you look at the above two photos. The steps to the ladies baths go downwards towards the old town whereas the steps to the gentlemens baths go downwards towards the pier. The original photo shows steps going down towards the pier.
