Has anyone any photos of the cottages in what was Station Road and is now Priory Meadow .My nan lived at no.5.We were always led to belive these were cottages for railway workers and most years my nan was flooded during the winter months.

Puzzled as to your reference to cottages,surely these were fairly large houses ? as to flooding many years ago this area was under water being part of the harbour ? and when it silted up all moved to what is now called the Old Town_ _ _You may be like to know that as far as flooding is concerned it still carries on, some of the shops losing a lot of stock as a result..

Thanks Patvic for your reply regarding cottages in Station Road,true there were larger houses but these were further up Station Road towards the Station.My nans cottage was no.5 ,second one in,which was opposite the entrance to the bus station. jeanb.

I found it a bit confusing but Station Road did not start at the Clarence pub which is on the corner but is listed as in Middle Street so where Hinds the jewellers is now would be where number 5 was..And what is the address of the buildings behind the Town Hall starting from what used to be Burtons ? to Middle Road and which I took to be part of Station Road..The jewellers Hinds has twice been flooded in recent years so nothing has really changed despite all that money spent on flood protection by Southern Water..All I can remember of Station Road is the Chip Shop and the pub on the corner and that there was a wall enclosing the cricket ground_ _ _.

Hi Patvick,it,s me again,The Clarence is indeed in Middle Street and Sation Road started after the pub,If you look in the book Hastings Bygones volume 3,on page 23 you will find a map of Hastings in 1873 and it shows Station Road and the cottages.In another book Hastings and St Leonards by Gavin Haines on page 39 you can see a photo of the cottages in 1860 before Priory Meadow was drained. My aunt who lived with nan at no. 5 was the last tenant to move out when the land was bought for the shopping centre, she refused to move and had to be evicted in the end. Happy Days.The chipshop was in Middle Street along with a shoe repairers and a warehouse for fruit and veg.Hope this might help. jeanb.

I'm also interested in Station Road as my Grandfather was born at No. 13 in 1877, and his father worked on the Railways. I will be joining the local Family History Society for Hastings to expand on my researches, and so the books you mention will I'm sure be of use to me as I too would like photographs of that area. I came across someone else on this forum earlier this year who was trying to find photographs as well and she actually had lived at No. 13 herself. I think her post is still here somewhere. I tried to send her a private message but unfortunately received no reply. Anyway, you've given me something more to look into, thank you.

Sorry I didn't reply ages ago, I'm not sure why I didn't but I think it's me you mentioned who used to live there, I was born in number 13 in 1951 and we moved out 1966, my father was at that time a retired postman and he'd said they were railway cottages, when we lived there quite a few of the neighbours worked on the railway so I don't know how we got one! I have got some photos of the Road when we were kids growing up. I moved out of Hastings in 1975 with my husband and then young children, we now live in Shropshire but still visit family and in contact with others who lived in Station Road when I did.

Hi Tim,i also are not sure how my nan got to live in no.5 as there was only her and my aunt living there.It seems really strange to walk into Priory Meadow now and know where her cottage used to stand and yes it still floods down there! regards,jeanb.
