Yes, this is definitely 18 Cambridge Gardens. In the early 1960's I worked in both sides and know that on each landing there were connecting doors through to each side, but today I am more than sure that these have been removed and bricked up as they are separate buildings now.
I can't after all this time remember clearly what the name of the house/s were but it could still have been under the name of Carlisle House and not Carlisle Boarding Establishment, and it wasn't Grosvenor Hotel either. It has obviously changed hands several times over the years and the name also.
But I can say for absolute positive that Geoff was talking about 18 Cambridge Garden, I seem to recall a Mrs Prior who was the landlady when we did work there, a right old Sergeant Major of a women, whereby she hollered and shouted out every command, but no one ever took notice. It was sheer coincidence that we did work in the house next door whereby Mrs Prior was not the Landlady there (thank goodness!) but the connecting doors on the landings were evident but nailed shut and probably the key holes stuffed with paper!!

Re: Carlisle House Boarding Establishment
Thanks to all for help with this, and the interesting anecdote from RP.
Now added to the gallery with it's correct address...

Re: Carlisle House Boarding Establishment
Attached information of No 18 in 1901 showing the boarding house owner and residents.
For some reason I cannot access the 1911 data
This gives an indication of who lived in boarding houses early 19th C

Does the sign above the doors say "Entrance No 18" ?

Yes, indeed it does Whiffler.
Re: Carlisle House Boarding Establishment
Prominent local builder and Politician (Liberal Party) a Mr. John Howell, carried out one of his biggest jobs on the large-scale development of the Cornwallis Estate in 1873, to including Cambridge Gardens.
He was unsuccessful in bidding for the construction of Hastings Pier (1869-72) but became Mayor in 1978.
His son was the main force behind the building of Hastings Grammar School (1883) and St Peters Church, Lower Park Road (1883).
Presumably this dates the building in question to circa 1873, or thereabouts, towards the last phase of a final Victorian expansion in the town.

Re: Carlisle House Boarding Establishment
A couple more photos dug up by Richard P. Thanks for sending these over.
Re: Carlisle House Boarding Establishment
Hi Geoff did you manage to confirm where the above boarding house was? I ask because I have a similar picture to the one you put up, a different group of people but its the same building.
Mine has a badly written date on it of what appears to be Aug 2 1906. All it has written on the back is "Gt Aunt Eliza Troup" and came with another postcard which is a photo of the lady herself.
would welcome any information you can provide
regards
