Carlisle House Boarding Establishment

Any ideas where this was? All the info I have is it's number 18, somewhere in St Leonards. Any help much appreciated.

A quick search of Hastings papers (1850-1950) comes up with nothing is St L.
There were several boarding establishments in Carlisle Parade. The easiest search would be to use Kelly's or Pikes at the Library. They are not easily available online that I can find and that can be searched

Carlisle Parade and Street were in Hastings proper, but in any case the street directories at the Library have been moved further afield, whilst restoration of the Library in Claremont is not due to complete until Summer of 2017.
Carlisle was the name of the Crown agent who evicted the inhabitants of the America Ground in 1835.
I see no connection, therefore, to St. leonards - I could be wrong (as per usual)!

It's scribbled on the back of a photo. Carlisle Boarding House St Leonards. I will get it scanned and upload a copy.

See the elderly lady top left looking out of the window, was she too frail to come outside?

I think the photo is circa 1900-1910 from the look of the clothing. I have searched again for Hastings Boarding Houses on a site I use and come up with over 11,000 references. When I add in 'Carlisle' to the options it comes up with nil. The building could be anywhere on a level piece of ground in St L. The doors are central so it looks as if it might have been built as one unit rather than adjacent converted terrace houses.

Thanks Colin, I believe the photo was 1912 so you're not far off with the guess.
The lady at the window makes it so much more interesting, in my opinion.

I am finding a Carlisle House listed at 20 Station Road and 18 Cambridge Gardens so of course the scribbled St Leonards on the back could well be wrong.

Are we in agreement that this is the same place? Grosvenor Guest House no.18 (and no.17 now separate) in Cambridge Gardens.

I think this is Cambridge Gardens, now Grosvenor Hotel (18) and No 17 on Google.

Features around windows & lattice work on GH survives, also its metalwork at pavement wall.

Other similar on that side have difference in angle/height

Their web page returns 403 for me.
