Harold Nursery

Postby Chris Page » Sat Jan 14, 2017 9:20 am

I have just discovered that my father, Stanley PAGE, worked at Harold Nursery under a Mr PAINE around 1930, and would like to discover more about the nursery. I have found some newspaper adverts from the 1920s and 1930s showing the nursery had premises in Harold Road and Clive Vale, Hastings, but as the nursery no longer exists can anyone tell me whereabouts in Harold Road and Clive Vale the nursery was, please? I would also appreciate any other information about the nursery and/or Mr PAINE.

Thanks for any help.

Your starter for 10

Nurseries shown on 1899 map on lower corner of Harold Rd & Lodge Rd.

See 1956 map https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/583402 ... /13/101329

By 1960s most are behind houses on Harold Rd. Not much there now bar housing and allotments

Harold Rd is in the Clive Vale area.

Thanks Whiffler, I wasn't aware of that website. It is a very good one for old maps.

I see Harold Nurseries is clearly marked on the 1956 map on the right of Harold Road going out of town just past the junction with Atnelstan Road, but before that is a larger unnamed nursery on the right by the junction with Lodge Road. Is that part of Harold Nursery or a different one?

Is there anybody on here who remembers the nursery?

Thanks, Chris Page

You have to be a member to view the map!

Were these Plant/Flower or vegetable nurseries worked up to supply demand from local retailers?

I'm not a member.

try going to the main site, look for the post code, and go from there. It won't let you get very close in, so start with Clive Vale area and step in.

Could you post the link to what you are viewing because it doesn't work for me with a postcode at all?

Richard
It is a little odd how to see it but I will post a screen shot tomorrow. For some reason it will not work on the tablet

I went there when I was about 7 or 8. We had a green grocers and I expect mum was looking at produce.

I'm on Windows 8, IE11, Desktop - and have had these links for a while.

So, try National Library of Scotland - all free. This takes me to Clive Vale grid square.

Detail is different to the others - e.g shape of nurseries and no label, but just one blob on SW junction of Harold/Lodge
