Martin House, St Leonards

Postby Chris Page » Fri Sep 15, 2017 5:21 pm

Does anyone know what and/or where Martin house, St Leonards was in 1931, please?

I have just discovered that my great uncle, Stanley GOLLOP, sailed from Plymouth to New York, USA on 11 September 1931 and gave his last UK address as Martin House, St Leonards.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Chris, can you please give reference information that it was actually Martin House, St Leonards?

Yes Richard, it is a record from UK, Outward Passengers Lists, 1890-1960 on Ancestry for Stanley Gollop, born 1883.

If you have a subscription to Ancestry, the full URL is <http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?_phsrc=uED2&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&gss=angs-c&new=1&rank=1&msT=1&gsfn=Stanley&gsfn_x=1&gsln=Gollop&gsln_x=NP_NN_NS&msbdy=1884&msbdy_x=1&msbdp=1&cp=0&MSAV=1&uidh=7zz&MSV=0&pcat=40&h=141944719&recoff=6%207&dbid=2997&indiv=1&ml_rpos=7>.

Hello Chris
Your great uncle's circumstances are a little more complicated than just seeking Martin Hse. You will have noted that the passenger lists show that he also crossed the Atlantic in 1929 (another cancelled trip in 1929), one in 1930 and as you say 1931. In each he is described as a farmer and in the other two living at 103 West Hill and then Railway Hotel, Battle.

I deduce that Martin House was merely the name of the house that he was living at the time. Presumably it was a temporary residence given his frequent trips. It is not a district or area. The name of an individual house is probably impossible to identify

Thanks for your thorough answer Colin and yes I am aware of my uncle's circumstances regarding the two planned 1929 trips that didn't happen, but didn't want to complicate my original request by including details about them.

Like you, I thought Martin House was the name of a house as opposed to an area or district, and was hoping it was large enough that somebody recognised it or knew of it. I had checked the newspaper records on FMP but am unable to find any record there, so guess I will have to put it into my outstanding research file unless something new comes to light.

Thanks again - Chris

From that time, the Householder's name might have been used - perhaps working for/living in with the Martins.

As an aside, the Railway Hotel at Battle became the Senlac. Not sure when ..... anyone?

Edited for extraneous apostrophe. Also, we did have a thread a year or three back about (the) Bushby House, where the Bushby family owned/managed/operated for some years - the term cropped up in a post card of Edwardian vintage.

Thanks Whiffler, I hadn't thought of that. There isn't anybody of the name of Martin in our family, but I will keep looking. Thanks also for the info about the Railway Hotel.

Chris
