Hello all, I wonder if anyone knows where I can find pictures of the corner of Warrior Square near the sea front from the 1950s or before?

This is the corner nearest the Goat Ledge Cafe which used to be a hotel.

I've tracked down some from the 70's and 80's but only sketches from older than this.

Would the council have this sort of thing? If so, any idea where I would ask for help?

The Adelphi seems to have been next door(s), 5 onwards? (edit - may have fronted onto main garden, rather than seaward)

When laid out and opened in 1864, Warrior Square was Belgravia. Unlikely this will help.

Excellent, thanks for this Whiffler - I'm hopefully going to have some news this week on the subject and will have more background on the building, but seeinng it in its original format helps.

1874 OS map has the building.

1899 OS map says it was a Club, as do others through to last in 1970

... confirms a Club, so likely to have had accommodation. Someone with contemporaneous Kelly's or suchlike will be along soon.

note that the last 3 frontages before Warrior Square are symmetrical. However, looking at Google you'll see that the last was never built as that is where the Club/Hotel you seek is.

I say this because people look to be playing the game on the grass square adjacent:

UncleB does not say why he wants to see images of the building at the west corner of W.S. at the seafront.
I agree that the square was laid out and completed by 1864.
Probably such huge buildings were built speculatively to attract the extremely wealthy or specifically arranged as hotels.
The change in fortunes down the years may have resulted in change of use and conversion into flats at some stage,
Former hotels may have also become mixed-use, with flats and G.P. surgeries or even care homes.
I am not sure what UncleB hopes to learn.

Clubs may have taken up residence in rooms and yet, despite what I said about a possible golf club, it is unlikely that such a body would have occupied the whole entity of a huge building.

Curious that it shows on OS maps for several decades as a Club.

It brings to mind images of the clubs in St James's and Pall Mall, but was it a seaside off-shoot of one of them?

Aha !. Found a map that says it was the East Sussex Club, and from there turned up links to the grave of the chap who rebuilt the club, and also to its closure dec1981 with interesting snippets.
