Hello all
I'm looking for any information about my dads younger days (from birth to 18 years).
His name is Arthur William Watson, born at Tower Road, St.Leonards.
Sister Kay, brothers George & Billy.
He lived at Willingdon Avenue with parents Arthur and Margaret(nee Barham).
He was born 04/05/35 and joined the Air Force in 1953.
He may have worked at a grocers called 'Maypoles' or 'The Maypole' and also as an engineer before he joined the Air Force.
He had links with Crawley and was into motorbikes and mechanics.
He married my mum on 04/12/1954 at Hastings Register Office.
If anyone has the tiniest snippet of information I would be grateful.

Maypole grocers were a chain in some parts, but a reference in the story of Logie baird's development of TV includes :-
* Baird's original apparatus which he used at Hastings was apparently made using a cardboard disc cut from a hat box, another disc of tin plate cut out with scissors, some lenses from bicycle lamps, sealing wax and darning needles for spindles and was powered by a small electric fan motor. He was helped in this by schoolboy, Norman Loxdale, who was sent to the Maypole Grocers in Castle Hill Road to buy tea chests to make the discs whilst the bicycle lamps came from Wheelers in the Arcade.

Do you know which schools your father attended?
School reports, and photographs may exist.
At what age he left? In the 1950's it was probably 15 years.
Most children went to secondary-modern schools which they left, at the age of fifteen, with few or no qualifications.
If he was aged 15 then only three years to find out what he was employed as before he joined the air-force in 1953.
Petrol rationing did not end until 1950.
The early 1950's were the mass-market heyday of the English seaside resort.
