Union Row or Fishers Cottages ?

Postby whiffler » Mon Mar 06, 2023 8:57 am

I have flagged the photo purporting to be Union Row as being suspect. Dissenting views most welcome !. I was thrown for a while by believing references to theatre exits into UR, which I suspect were Union Street (an alley before 19th century widening).

I've left details in the gallery, but throw it in here as it will get seen more

For anyone researching Union Row, there were 15 apparently but map shows 16 - assuming that furthest from All Saints St (aka Fishers St) would have an address on Bourne Walk, then count from far (15) to near. If not, relative numbers need to apply.

15 larger abutting 113 - also aligns with rear of 115
14 not so large
13 group of 3 - chimneyed
12 -""- 12 &11 opposite 'north wing' of Providence Row
11 -""- -""-
10 lower roof
9 extended to rear, opp centre of Providence Row
8 group of 5 with highly pitched roof
7 -""-
6 -""-
5 -""- opposite 'west wing' of Providence Row
4 -""-
remainder not in picture

=====================

The high building at the end is very distinctive, and the only match is 113 All Saint's Street. The lower floors have been remodelled, but it fits.

The cottages at the far end are in pairs, with levels changing as the ground falls toward the camera. The building on the camerman's right has a gap between the four cottages shown (note the protuberances above the doorway to prove how many). All houses have aligned frontages.

None of the above match Union Row.
