Postby Geoff » Tue May 10, 2016 11:46 am

Another really well made short film by Justin Lycett showing the reopening of Hastings Pier in 2016.

Works okay from here Richard. Tested on PC using Firefox and Chrome and both play correctly. What device/browser are you using?

Using XP Professional with Firefox and get the message as follows:

"no video with supported format and MIME type found"

Wow, Windows XP - to be honest i'm not surprised it doesn't work for you. XP was superseded in 2007.

The two videos recently added use a format known as HTML5. This was introduced in 2014 so well past the supported lifetime of XP.

HTML5 works with 90% of internet users today and is the modern way to do things to make them a bit future proof, hence why I chose that format. It will only get more popular as people upgrade their systems.

I'm afraid to say your tech is just too old to handle it Richard, sorry!

The likes of Vimeo and YouTube have a "fallback" which will serve a different format video to older computers. They can afford the server space to store duplicates of all the videos in various formats, whereas I have had to choose the most common and future proof to keep the costs down. Videos are big files and storing them several times is not really an option i'm afraid.

Can you try this one please Richard (and whoever else reads this)...
http://www.1066online.co.uk/hastings/ba ... cumentary/

It uses an embed of the YouTube video rather than storing a copy on my servers. The question is does it play on your XP system?

I should be able to do similar with Vimeo if this works for you.

It 'plays' on my XP system perfectly Geoff, thanks!!
I can only assume that you want to embed (sensible instead of using space on your servers) is because the alternative i.e. linking to external websites, is because eventually links can break and external sites can go down.
Nice to keep it all in-house, and protected, so to speak!
Well done :D

Excellent news, thanks for testing.

You are right, keeping it in-house stops the big boys sneaking their ads on and linking to their other content. The more visitors I can keep on 1066 rather than sending them to external sites the better.

But at the end of the day I need to keep my regulars happy ;)
