What you wish you had been told BEFORE you moved!

Postby Technique » Mon Jun 09, 2014 10:31 pm

Bit of a tenuous Hastings link this one -could be relevant to other areas; so I throw this one open to the floor:

What are the things you wish you had been told/known before you moved into somewhere - be it your present home or a previous one.

In my London flat:

That if I had bought the house up the road (in London) for 40k more 20 years ago, it would have been worth 480k more than my flat now; my Mum told me not to "in case I lost my job and couldn't afford the repayments," AAAAAAAgh!

That the bloke next door would snore so loud that no amount of soundproofing would deaden his noise (in every other respect he is a delight).

Leading to us buying a detached house in Hastings. :D That is adjacent to a pretty rough area - who'd a thunk it? But at least no-one is snoring at us!

There is no perfect place to live that satisfies all requirements so I suppose you have to decide what is most important in your life and aim towards that.

Moving home, like all major life decisions is often a leap in the dark. After your head stops throbbing with all the ifs and buts, you just have to jump (or not, as the case may be). It can be very daunting.

That the church bell ringers in St Leonards are pretty enthusiastic on a Sunday morning! :) Not something I'd ever considered before, not having lived in a place near so many churches, but sometimes they can be quite loud.

Of course, having moved from London, it's much nicer to be woken by bells rather than sirens! ;)

That living on a hill means that your street (picturesque in other circumstances) would resemble The River Wild once it rains - today was Somerset Levels, eat your heart out day in Blacklands. ;)

I agree with Tarmar about the sirens though... :D

Yes!! I haven't seen the Alexandra Park stream (leading to the discharge pipe on the beach) so badly flooded as it was today.
Well, perhaps once when the discharge was blocked in late 2009.
Footpaths near the stream were flooded over today and ducks swam in places where no duck has swum before.

Watch out for the wild wind next!!
