Well, we moved here from Croydon about 5 years ago, (thank God). The rush hour lasts from about 08:40-09:05. If you have a car you can get to the (Conquest) hospital from anywhere in town in about 15 mins. Fergit about buses, they are withdrawing services, for some reason. (I blame Stagecoach, (and George Bush, ! ).
Come on down, the quality of life is huge compared with anywhere in London. Some people pay money to come on holiday here, and you can have it for free.
(Keep the Day job in London, 'cos wages are crap here. People think because property is relatively cheap, it's cheap to live_ _ __ _ _Bullshit! Baked beans, Coca-Cola, petrol, bread, Internet connection, etc, cost about the same as Croydon)
Oh, and if you must commute, the A21 is one of the most dangerous roads in Europe, so be careful.
But the beach is only 10 minutes away, and the people are so much nicer.
Schools? That's why we moved!!!!!

Move to Hastings or St Leonards - you will not regret it!

A lot of the so-called problems are a legacy of the past or have been greatly exagerrated. You are far safer here than in most UK cities - ignore the cliches and judge for yourself.

Where else has a miles of country park lterally on its doorstep? Dozens of independent shops (look no Starbucks!), a lively sea fishing community, stunning architecture, a vibrant arts scene and loads of festivals, the gorgeous Alexandra Park. Plus the countryside around Hastings is lovely. Hmmm, breathe that fresh sea air.

I moved from Brighton three years ago and it's been a revelation. A beautiful town, rich in history and full of character. The quality of life is 10x better. Unlike Brighton there are not junkies lining the pavements, ripped open bin liners all over the streets and pretentious media types talking about loft conversions in pubs that all look the same. It' s down to earth here and it's getting better all the time - more businesses opening, lots of exciting regeneration developments and new events planned. Plus it's Britain's sunniest town.

ps Clive Vale is a fine area. Each area has a different general profile of people living there. If you are a family you might like to consider Silverhill, Blacklands, St Helens or Clive Vale. Younger people might opt for town centre or West Hill. Maze Hill in St Leonards is lovely. The so-called no-go area is Hollington which is largely council. But we're not talking Moss Side or Toxteth here - it's really not that bad. I manage to visit its Tescos regularly without getting car-jacked or losing my hubcaps.

It's really nice to read something positive about Hastings. I also moved from Brighton just over 2 years ago and have never been happier. Brighton has lost it's character and has now priced itself so those who have made it a better place can't afford to live there anymore. Hastings has got the lovely atmosphere that Brighton used to have 10 years ago, so I hope that it doesn't follow too closely in it's footsteps.

I have to say something in defence of St.Leonards! - like most towns in England there is a visible element of harmless drunks and equally harmless refugees, but unlike most towns they wont generally bother you if you don't bother them. And anyway - how about cutting them some slack - you never know what's around the corner do you?

St.Leonards is an up and coming town thanks to the booming house prices in Brighton sending London escapees our way at a rate of knots. My advice is to get a place before it turns into Kensington on Sea. Come and have a look before you listen to all this nasty hype - largely from people who don't live here or contribute to the community they are so quick to criticise!

(I have a flat on the Seafront and it ROCKS!)

[I've been in St Leonards now for 13 years most of my adult life. I would stay away from places like Carisbrooke Road and Kenilworth, they are known as bedsit alley. Mercatoria is said to be resonable. Gensing area is quite pretty and there are quite a few good streets in that area with lovely nice big houses. If you keep away from right near Warrior Square station and I've also been told that Warrior Square and Hollington is a not that nice. West St leonards is really nice> If you need specifics on a road, email me.
Hastings and St Leonards have a thriving black and ethnic community, which brings new energy and brillance to the area. It also has a large "new age" culture and lots of artists display their wares in the many art exhibitions. There is always so much going on in Hastings underneath the touristy place that people take it for.

Lived in hastings from 1986 to 2003 , was excellent until approx 1998 when town filled up with scum , crack heads , smack heads , junkies , nonces etc , glad i moved , car crime and vandalism is popular pasttime in st leonards , i have stayed in other areas on work including moss side , reading etc and these are just as bad , i would avoid areas such as central st leonards big time , the outlieing areras are ok >:)

Very nervous about making the wrong choice as the houses look so lovely but we have heard a lot about "bad" roads whan we have chatted to people generally but can't get a good feel for why a particular road is considered "bad".
