Well, back from Hastings today and I wasn't disappointed at all, we really enjoyed the area. How does everyone get used to the steep slopes though? my legs are killing me! We thought Alexandra Park was lovely and that's the preferred area we'd chose to live in. Also liked parts of St Leonards- the parts around Filsham Road where the new houses are and up around The Ridge. Probably wouldn't choose to live in the older terrace type houses. We might buy an apartment if it's a while before we moved. Can't imagine drug pushers or pimps (above letter) bothering us much, we're hardly night animals! Just want a nice park and the beach and Hastings has both. Anyhow, we had fun so thanks Hastings![quoted]

I moved to hasting from london with my family when I was 16 and then moved back to london on my own aged 19. but once I moved away i just missed the calm relaxed envioment in the town so I moved back to St leonards when I was 21, and have lived there ever since (14 years). I have to say that I have only ever found that the people that have lived in Hastings and never moved out of the town seem to think the town has a bad reputation. I have never found it to be anything but great and its improving all the time. I basically feel that anytime that anything bad does happen like someone being assulted or what ever it is put all over the local paper, this is simply because it is so out of the norm where in citys it is a daily event and does not even make the papers. I still have friends and family in london and they love coming to the town and its only going to get better with the investment coming in to the town and all that it brings better roads better rail and better communications. Hastings is a great place to live and is a great place to bring up a family.

I live in Wishing tree area in St.Leonards on Sea and it doesnt seems very bad for me.There are some council flats and some private houses, the schools are all right, there is Hollington primary school, the Groove secondary school, parks, pubs, local shops, post office, pharmacy etc. There is very little crime in this area, and what crime there is is petty.

Hello Geoff I too live in central St Leonards and yeah its got its problems but then where hasn't? Ask people that when they start moaning. When I'd been living in a g/f flat at Carisbrooke Rd for 3 years an estate agent remarked that she doubted if she could sell our flat as the road was "full of prostitutes and drug pushers" - I must have had my eyes shut for 3 years because in all that time it was a quiet residential street.

Now I am even more in the thick of what is supposed to be the worst area, and I would not hesitate to walk out in the street at any hour day or night. I always feel safe here.

Hi There,

We too are considering moving to St Leonards-on-sea, Hastings. My daughter is contemplating a Housing Association Exchange, and obviously, not coming from that area, we have no idea as to whether this would be a good area to move to. Unfortunately we can't remember the name of the street that she would exchange to, only that it begins with ' W ' and doesn't seem to be to far from the sea front.

We would be grateful for any advice in this matter, and possibly ideas, if any, on which areas of St Leonards to avoid.

Thank-you,

Jenny

I am thinking of buying too and have made a few visits. My advise is you should do the same.It is small town of 80,000 or so, and quite dense so good and bad streets, insofar as you can judge from loooks, are very close to one another.

That said, if you have a family then perhaps around Alexander park is for you, but there is a great range of streets and property including the Old Town area that you shoudl see for yourself, and don't miss the views form West or East Hill; they really are lovely.

I have lived in St Leonards for a good few years now, and because of circumstances have been unable to flee this god forsaken place!! The guy who mentioned druggies, drunks and prostitutes etc. was absolutely bang on. Why is everyone in such denial? I have seen this area progressively worsen in the time i have lived here, and i have finally got the opportunity to sell up and save myself from this highly depressive, anti social town!! I have lived in other parts of our beautiful country, and by far this has to be the worst! You have to live here for a while to fully understand that it's not a healthy place to live. Even the locals, (the honest ones), will agree!!!!
