Anyone moved to H from London ot Brighton?

Postby tom » Thu Jan 05, 2006 8:08 pm

How do you find the change in lifestyle? What are the pluses and minuses? I am moving from Brighton in a few months and am a gay man. After two day- long visits I came away thinking, yes, I like it, but with all this talk of crime and drugs and prostitution; now I love it!

Seriously, hasn't is got better? The general feeling from those I've talked to seems to be that, at last the town is comming into its own despite its relative isolation. Perhaps that isolation is also accountable for its small town charm?

I moved to Hastings a year ago and, although certain areas are rough, others are very safe. We moved because our son was mugged 4 times in SW London and he says that even the toughest down here are pussycats compared to London! The pace of life is a lot slower than London, and if you can accept that and go with the flow then you'll find you are much more laid back than up in the smoke. The big plus side for us is the live music scene - every night of the week. There is always something going on down here - they hold processions, festivals and parties for every occasion, and I think it was the best move I ever made!

We're moving down to St leonards from North London in about 8 weeks time and we can't wait. Their seems to be a really lively artistic community. I'm a writer and my husband is a musician so we're attracted to the artistic scene while stepping back a bit from how hectic London is.

The whole crime thing doesn't worry me at all - nothing could be as bad as London!

Tom, my sister tells me there is an increasingly strong gay community - mainly coming from Brighton. I've met some of her gay friends when we've been down to visit and they seem very happy in hastongs and St leonards.

We moved here from Brighton 5 years ago and never looked back.
Thought our teenage kids would hate us for moving here but both see it as a positive move.

i am 3 weeks away from my move to hastings, beit that i live down here weekends and awaiting the big move_ _ _

worked all over the country and all towns have bad areas , crime, rubbish, drugs etc_ _ _ i feel safe in hastings and late night drinking is fine and safe if u use your common sense and brains that you would in any town or high street in the country_ _ _

I would never go into Reading where i live late at night, but feel really safe in hastings_ _ _ i think you have to have a bit of luck and MOSTLY common sense when in a strange town you dont know that well_ _ _The Plus side of hastings is the relaxed atmosphere, the slower pace of life, and the exciting weekends and evenings esp the music scene_ _ _.

Funny story though, the first time i went out in Hastings late at night , i got a punch in the face in The Crypt, which has not happened to me for years_ _ _ total mistaken identity by this young lad, who when realised my size and what he had done , had it on his toes before i could react_ _ _. No damage done, i can take a hard punch_ _ _but the point is , could happen anywhere or to anyone_ _ _

dont scaremonger about Hastings, there are far worse places.. i have lived in Bradford, Leeds and up North_ _ _.now thats scary !!!!

cheers Chris

Lived in Brighton for a couple of years, whilst I liked it I much prefer Hastings.

Depends heavily on your personal circumstances whether you can choose to live where you want (or think it is better) or whether you have to put up with what fate bestows upon you.

It's very hard to compare places like Brighton and Hastings and London the Capital City.
London clearly has more opportunity all round and Brighton is known as "London By The Sea"
Hastings is calm in comparison and without much employment because of the awful transport network, especially the strange and poorly thought out roads which are said to stop much business from taking hold

There is probably less anti-gay attitude these days, but who knows, Hastings may turn the corner one day.
