Looking to buy in St Leonards

Postby Samplanet » Mon Sep 01, 2008 1:23 am

Found this forum which seems awesome with advice and providing a possible social link.

I'm seriously looking to buy in the area of St Leonards - 1 - 2 bedroom flat within walking distance of the seafront or having sea views with communal gardens. My main interest is to join the local sailing club and to be involved in the local community.

I've found Brighton and Eastbourne to be just slightly outside of my price range unless you want to live in a really unsavoury area.?!

I've been checking previous emails with regards areas - Warrior Square seems to come up a lot as well as Church road but I'm getting the vibe it's not such a good area because of drugs. At the moment I'm living in a not so nice area of Notts and really don't want the same. I'm coming down mid September to check the area out. I would prefer to be in St Leonards rather than Hastings.

Any advice would be much appreciated especially about community in St Leonards.

I have lived in various parts of St Leonards and can recommend West Hill Road, especially the end towards MFI. I don't think anywhere has a serious drugs problem these days, just some areas are cleaner than others.

I find there is a real sense of community in St Leonards.

When I lived in London or Kent you were just another face in the street. You only knew your friends. The rest of the people were strangers, even if you saw them every day at the shop or the bus stop etc.

But around here everybody talks to each other. We all talk to people we don't even know. We all help each other out.

Its quite interesting that there are many different types of people here. You can't put them all in one category.

First of all a warm prospective welcome - I hope you do make St Leonards your home as there is lots going on here and the indications are that it is going to get better. This forum and the general opinion of people outside the town won't leave you with any illusions - there is crime here and a drugs problem, as well as enough dog shit to sink the Titanic, but as I've said before even the most remote rural areas have drugs problems and these days you can be murdered on your own doostep in Chelsea.

It's important to have some perspective. I moved here from London and frankly St Leonards is a million miles better. You may one day be the victim of petty crime or vandalism (I hope not) but that could happen anywhere in the world.

On the upside you have a thriving arts scene, great bars and restaurants, sailing, beautiful parks and a friendly, creative community.

As far as areas go, my favourite is the area known as Burton St Leonards. It's probably more pricey but as it's the best area (just my opinion) it would make a good reference point. Why not rent for a few months first to get a feel for it? There is bags of rented property in St Leonards so you won't have any trouble finding a short let.

Good luck and viva St Leonards!

By the way, flats in the large sea front block known as "The Marina" are, I think, still as cheap as chips and very close to the sailing club.

I must say, I've lived in South London and Chatham and I much prefer it here to either of them, and I live in the Warrior Square area!

If, as I suspect, by 'the Marina' you mean Marine Court then yes, flats are cheap to buy for what they are - but the cheapest ones don't generally have a sea view. The big drawback, though, is that the service charge is VERY high - when I looked into buying one 15 years ago it was going to cost an extra GBP40 a week, though to be fair that did include basic heating through an underfloor system running right trough the block.

There are some good flats in Church Road just off the sea front worth looking at. I live further up the hill off Bohemia Road and I think it is great.

Where ever you go there are bad things around just have to avoid them!

St Leonards is super! good luck.

Hi there,

I've been trying to sell my flat in Chapel Park road for 7months and although Ive got an offer for 75K they are messing me about and I don't think the sale is going to happen.! Would you be intesrsted in maybe taking a look at my flat? The posctode is TN37 6HU which is the upper end of Chapel Park Road. Its about a 4 minute walk to Warrior square. Its about 8 minutes walk to the seafront. if you'd like more details on the property Ive advertised it on Houseladder (maybe search under the postcode, its number is 26) . Alternatively, you could email me on liamsoul@lycos.co.uk and I can give you more detail.
I actually live in London now after living in the flat for a year. I only moved because the commute to London was taking its toll so I moved there
Many thanks
