Hi
My wife and I are thinking of moving from London to St Leonards/Hastings. What's it like here?
I have heard there is quite a bit of crime in the area and a lot of truancy. I guess it's no worse than London, but nice to hear some opinions.
Thanks

Re: moving
Hi,
I've lived in Hastings (west hill area) for 9 years, and its a fairly lovely place to be. The crime isn't good, mainly car crime, but it is getting better. The areas you mentioned are probably to do with council estates, which do have a bad reputation, but as in all towns/cities there are problems, nowhere can be crime free! The main areas to avoid are: Farley Bank, Halton Flats, Central St Leonards (alot of immigrants here) etc.. There are other lovely places to be..you could try West Hill Area, Broomgrove is fine actually (just a few hotspots)!, Ore Village is lovely, West St Leonards are all ok. The problem with hastings according to a police officer I met, is that no area is crime free unlike other towns there are usually crime ridden areas in particular, but Hastings has been touched in most places by crime, and that is why we get bad press.
I have 2 boys, and am happy to bring them up in Hastings. One of the best schools in my area is Blacklands Primary. Avoid Elphinstone school like the plague! My oldest was bullied there, and nothing was done about it.
Hope this helps you make a decision. feel free to e-mail me with any specific queries you may have

My partner and I bought a place in st leonards about 18 months ago and go down there most weekends - it is a complete change of culture from the hectic pace of life in town - but the scenery and fresh air more than make up for the lack of fancy restaurants etc - and to be fair the place s really improving, week on week - my advice would be to try it as a weekend base first - esp as if still working n town, the transport links into charing cross/vistoria are not great yet.

I was interested in what you wrote. I am planning to move to Hastings or thereabouts with my son. I am originally from London but have been out of the country for a while, and don`t want to return to London. I am astounded by how much flat and house prices have risen, so I will be looking for a place to rent. Anyway, I really want my son to go to a good school and have no real knowledge of schools in that area. I am going to Hastings in a couple of weeks to look around.
Do you have anything to add to what you wrote about nice areas to live, particularly for children? About schools? I would be very appreciative of anything you have to say!

Re: moving
hi we just did exactly that. we lived in banstead surrey above a shop and were stuck in the rent trap in town as everything kept becoming unobtainable so we have moved down into st helens road hastings (3 months ago). We love it here but i still commute by car into london (croydon). I would say do move but consider work as i am doing an extra 3 hrs commute a day now. But in my case i think im much happier.
Going fishing tomorrow with my son across the road in alexandra park
