Moving to St Leonards

[Brightonians]

Wondered if anybody on here could give us some insight in to living in St Leonards?

My wife and I are both 32 and currently live in Brighton, we've been accepted in principal on a first time buyer scheme in Hastings and have found an amazing place on Pevensey Road in St Leonards.

We love old Victorian architecture and the sort of thing we could get in Brighton for the same money isn't even worth thinking about.

We'll be commuting so being close to a train station is a big bonus.

We really want to go for it, but have read so many conflicting reports on what the area is like. We're used to inner-city grit but Brighton is a very multi-cultural / easy going / accepting place and we're a bit worried about committing to an area we don't know.

So, can anybody give us some words of assurance? Anybody on here moved from Brighton? Is Norman Road really 'on the up'?

We really like St Leonards and live on Albany Road, which is off Pevensey Road.
I think the main things to think about are - the train is going to be an extra 1/2 hour if you are commuting to London. So it's a long trip.
St Leonards doesn't have all the thing Brighton has to offer but it's getting there. I think it's more laid back than Brighton as it doesn't have the clubbing scene but it does have an alternative vibe and lots of artist are moving here. It has lots of problems but all the new people moving here are very positive about the area so I think that helps.

I personally don't have trouble moving around so we moved here thinking if we don't like it we can move. Not so easy if you have children though.

There are lots of old threads on this forum giving peoples opinions on the area which you might like to look through.

I hope I am not too late to warn you but me and my partner moved from london. In the first week of living here someone broke into our house, approached by "druggies" who threatened my wife. Please don't move here go to Bexhill or Eastbourne, price in Bexhill is not much more and such a lovely town. Move here and you will regret it. We did and are now looking to move out the area.

Please don't be put off by negative comments. St Leonards is a wonderful place to move to. It is friendly vibrant and more multicultural than Hastings. You can find all kinds of cuisines from Caribbean to Indian. In fact the Taj Mahal on Western road was recently voted the best Indian food in the the south east! You have the station which connects you to London, Brighton, Gatwick and Ashford. Many folks are moving here from Brighton and, of course London because it really is like Brighton used to be 10 - 15 years ago. The higher end of Norman Road feels by far the best part of the road to me
The road to the Warrior Square Station is not great but improving.
I suspect you have to accept living "cheek by jowl" with squalid and salubrious.
No doubt Brighton is similar but a lot more expensive and sometimes dubbed 'dirty London by the sea'
I have never felt anyone has an axe to grind here particularly either - they are a fairly accepting bunch and too 'easy-going' to start trouble for the sake of it.

My family moved to St Leonards in July 2011, moved here
From Cornwall, love it such a great family town!
So many events on, friendly people. The weather has been fantastic
So far. Hot in summer, bit of snow in winter (kids happy).
Loved every day!

Been here a year now and loving it -- we keep finding new reasons why! Don't miss the 'Marine Quarter' under Marine Court. Or Appleyards the amazing butcher on Bexhill Road. Or the great shops in King's Road (antiques, furniture, picture framers, stationers, art materials, haircuts!).
Or Ravenside for most mainstream shopping you are likely to need.
Hastings and St L people have a special flavour -- friendly, slightly bohemian, very eccentric, lots of fun and don't take themselves too seriously.
And when we do have to go to London it's only 95 min from West St L station.
And there's the whole of Sussex on our doorstep to explore.
Pevensey road seems like a nice road with some magnificent houses (nice friendly church too) -- go on, take the plunge!

St Leonards is great place to live, ignore negative comments. Affordable decent Georgian/Victorian housing stock, great vibe, friendly people. More authentic than Brighton.
