Tunbridge Wells to Hastings

Hey,
We're seriously considering a move to Hastings from Twells. It's somewhere we both agree we like and I love it. Our house has sold and I'm fed up of living in a bland town with no personality *meoooww!* Originally from London I have found twells unfriendly and dull.
However, it is a great place for our kids, aged 2 and 7 and they are the reason we moved away from London's frenetic craziness!!
So, I'm looking for advice on Primary's, secondary sch's and gd/bad areas. We are viewing a property next wk close to Morrisons on Queens Rd??? Is there much profit in doing up the old one's, my partner is a builder?
Any advice would be much appreciated

Sorry that you haven't had a response yet to your post on the Forum. Unusual, but maybe with the onset of the cold weather people are struggling with getting their central heating systems going ..!

I'm no expert on properties but I have been here for sixteen years (ex-Londoner) and know a bit about the areas. Tunbridge Wells is more polished (and civilised?) than Hastings, because frankly it can afford to be, but I liked Hastings (from the first moment) precisely because of its bohemian and relaxed character, slow and definitely not frenetic. I would say that it's probably good for kids too because there are tons of interesting things going on here, a lot to get involved with and a very healthy atmosphere. And a beautiful landscape.

You need to explore around different areas because Hastings is very mixed, down by Morrisons is ok, probably fairly safe along that stretch of Queens Road although the street is currently a bit shabby and not the most exciting in Hastings. That may well change later, so maybe it's worth doing up a property and investing some money in it? (Others would advise you better).

Other areas are much nicer, I like St Leonards very much (west of London Road) and many of the small workmen's cottages have been done-up beautifully and the sea is just 200 yards away. Further away from Morrisons near Alexandra Park there are several really nice tree-lined areas but more expensive therefore!

Not much there but it may help you. For schools, failing advice from other parents, get hold of the Hastings Observer some times, it will give you an idea of what's going on and local issues or problems which are causing concerns.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I really appreciate views from an experienced habitant and have exciting news...!
This week we had an offer accepted on a property.
We are all thrilled and can't wait to experience that laid back bohemian Hastings vibe you have described.
Now I need to find a primary school to suit my daughter...

That's great, you must indeed be quite excited! There will always be problems of course and setbacks - the thing is to not be fazed - if you really want change and want something to work out, you will find a way.

You might find it useful to look at hastingsonlinetimes.co.uk - apart from being a very colourful and interesting online magazine, it also gives a very different and more balanced view of all that goes on in Hastings than that presented by the Hastings Observer (rather a voice for the business community and for the Council!).

Good luck.
