Parking revisited

I note that a number of parking spaces, once available to every car user, have become 'residents permit' spaces, in the last couple of years.
This seems perfectly reasonable as residents deserve some sort of priority of use, but If I have visitors now they have no place to go.
So, the question is, should I pay for a parking permit,as a resident, in order to let a visitor use my 'zoned parking space' or is there a daily or weekly ticket available that works out cheaper for occasional visitors?
I understand I can buy visitor permits but that these are limited to 2 or 5 hour periods, not much use for overnight or two or three days stay by my visitors.
