Some lovely old photos of the staff at the gas works sent over by John Gale, along with the captions.
Image 1 I assume is outside the gas works . My grt grt grandfather is standing in the doorway .... circ 1915 or thereabouts.
image 2 I’m not sure for sure that this one is gas works employees but the chap back row 2nd from right with bowler hat is him again . I’d be interested if anyone can pinpoint if this was taken in Hastings ...
“Cyder” written in the windows
image 3 is within the gas works itself ... he’s the chap with moustache towards the left ,hat ,hands on hips .... all circa 1915 I think

Gas Works Staff
Re: Gas Works Staff
Photo 2 - the 'shrubs' at either end of the group seem to be an early attempt at 'photoshopping out' of unwanted figures.
Several men wearing some kind of floral emblem?
Can't place the pub in vicinity of Gas Works.
Size of rear row, cobined with arced step at base of group, suggests 8 steps up to front door 4ft above pavement ?
Adjacent building on left has name ending I E S ' .... behind lamp. Going by shape of window, I'd guess 8-10 earlier letters missing.

Re: Gas Works Staff
I may be wrong, but I think the Pub in the second picture could well be The Bulverhythe. It looks very similar to the Public Bar entrance that was on the corner of Bulverhythe Road
Re: Gas Works Staff
Hi guys , thanks for the response , Just wanted these photos to be shared to be honest .Any feedback is fantastic .I did wonder if the pub was a pub out of town and is a works jolly up ? The
Bulverhythe pub could be a good shout though ,seeing that it's not far from the Glynde Gap gas works of old . Having looked at a picture , all be it a drawing , of the entrance to that pub i'm not so sure. Sadly, although i have the originals, there are no clues on the back of the photos either
Cheers though

Re: Gas Works Staff
Lovely photos. Photo 2 people are wearing their Sunday best, and there's children, so perhaps a works outing or maybe a family photo. If only we could read the sign over the door.
Re: Gas Works Staff
Ha ha !! I’ve had that photo in my pocession for over 40 years . I’ve never notice the kids !!! I have wondered if it was a works jolly up ... probably somewhere nearby ... often happened on those days . Cheers for the comment
Re: Gas Works Staff
Not the Bulverhythe - 1909 map shows it much the current shape, with no adjacent building.
Does the photo itself support my view ref the 'photo-shopping' ?
