St Rode, London Road, Hastings

Postby Chris Page » Mon Jan 28, 2019 11:14 am

One of my ancestors, Florence Annie REED, born 1905, is shown in the 1929 Hastings Electoral Register at St Rode, London Road. The premises are shown next to 385-387 London Road, that appear to be at the end of the road because the even numbers in London Road are shown next. Does anybody know what type of premises St Rode was, please? The only reference I have been able to find on Google is an ESCC record of January 1947 for it to be converted into a home for the aged. Florence was incapacitated and died in 1941 at the young age of 36. Thanks for any help or information.

I think you'll find that it's the building that stands opposite the bus stop at Silverhill (the bus stop by the butcher's shop). Years ago, it was a surgery (St. Rhode's Surgery) and I was a patient there as a very young boy. The eagles (I think they were eagles) on the gateposts scared me witless!

Thanks Derek, I'll have a look on Google Earth to try and find the building. When was it a surgery?

It remained as a surgery until at least the mid 1950s. After that, I don't know.

This is it looking towards Silverhill Junction (and yes, they are eagles).

1955 shows 'surgery' & 'St Rode Cottage' in different places.

Between cottage and junction was a Mission Hall, previously S.A. Hall, before that a S.A. Barracks was shown on east of junction

S.A. presumably Salvation Army
