Primark

Postby Richard » Sat Feb 16, 2019 9:56 am

Primark is set to open on 6th March.
I don't know if they are any good, I have never been to one.
It should bring many more shoppers to the area generally.

Debenhams can't compete for clothing sales and are handing over space to restaurants and other food businesses and planning to revamp beauty halls to bring in more services such as blow-dry bars.

I think I went into one once, in Eastbourne or Brighton ..? Wasn't greatly impressed. Much the same cheap, street fashions which you see everywhere, all made in Bangladesh or China.

Debenhams similar but more expensive, hence the shop floor is often almost empty of customers.

It is almost impossible to find real quality clothing in high streets, only in specialist shops in London or online. A notable exception is the retro shops in Brighton. And Xanadu in Norman Road - I have just found a splendid fawn suede coat, fleece-lined, almost perfect condition. Just a few pounds (though I would have been willing to pay more - don't tell them that). There IS still a market for quality clothes, just not a big one I suppose.

After I found a suede winter coat in Norman Road, almost immediately the weather started changing! It's like spring today of course and the forecast is 60F by next Sunday.

I'm sure there will be snow before Easter .. meantime, I can't wait to start planning more travelling this year in this beautiful country.

Returning to Primark, Debenhams etc., we are surrounded by nail parlours, hair salons and too many cafes. We could really do with some decent shops. Good luggage/travel shop? Mens' outfitters? Good tool shop like the one in Devonshire Road, Bexhill? All these once existed in Hastings but have gone ..

I went into the Hastings Primark this week soon after it opened. What an awful lot of rubbish. Nobody over 25 in there and the whole floor devoted to garish street fashions, hoodies, tee-shirts. track suit bottoms and so on.

I did end up buying some cheap knickers for £4.50! When I got home, they were paper thin, very skimpy and uncomfortable - and went straight into the rubbish bin. I think people buy this stuff and only wear it oncee or twice. Nothing in there which would last you years and label you as well-dressed.

The only items I have ever bought were Xmas sweaters that I wore a couple of times to parties and now they languish in some cupboard somewhere.
