Twin Bin scheme.

Well that time is nearly upon us so lets have your opinions fellow Hastonians :w00t:

What say you?

My personal thoughts are that i agree with it in principle. Yay for more recycling, an lets face it some people make no effort at all, so it will do them good to play their part for a change, (my own sister for one ) who throws everything in the bin for land fill despite my nagging

I admit to my worries about the practicalities of it though. I am not worried about not having enough room in the bins because i recycle loads already with regular trips to the tesco facilities for bottles etc, and i have two composters on the go that deal with garden waste , veg peelings, cardboard etc.
What happens when you have a clear out binge on your kids bedroom though? 6 bin bags worth last binge! I am sure i am not the only person who's 11 year old daughters cupboards are in fact a tardis. Not everyone has a car to get stuff down the tip. The rule of no extra bin bags except what fits in your wheelie bin, is gonna cause problems me thinks.

To get yourself a cheap composter go out to blackbrooks nursery and fill in one of their forms and you can get one for 15 quid! excellent value or you can arrange home delivery from www.getcomposting.com/escc

what i am worried about is all this malarky of having to put it next to the edge of the pavement closest to my property by 7am on my bin day, and by sheer magik it will still be there when i get home at 5.30 from work. Not bloody likely. It will be in the res by then, or down the road with the kids playing in it, or set light too. What do you do then? It seems that our neighbours in bexhill get no joy when they phone the number for such problems, they just get an answer machine and nobody phones them back .
What about our old folk too? i have plenty come into our local shop and they just don't know how they will manage to lug the heavy bins about. They are not all registered disabled , just old an a bit frail so wont qualify for the assisted help.
Its not just their concern either. I spoke to a bin man who says that him an his colleagues worry about the old folk too. Lets hope community spirit regains its popularity eh. We will have to look after our old folks ourselves and make sure their bins get pulled out ready.

i understand the above concerns raised, however is this not the 'dont like change ' culture rather than practical changes.

I still have to get up early to put black bags out , because if left out overnight either the fox has a go, or in the mornings the seagulls are having great fun and breakfast in my bins spreading it all over the pavement.


Also, health and safety wise it must be better to contain rubbish in a plastic bin than in black bags_ _ _the dustman dont have to lift heavy objects and less danger of being cut with sharp objects poking out of plastic bags.

Also,love the idea of the seperate recycling bin rather than having loads of the current blue bags clogging up my garage. And before anyone says it, yes you should have loads of recycling in 2 weeks, if you hav'nt then you need to change your practices and save this planet now !!!_ _ _right on!!!!_ _ _.. i am down to 1 black bag for 2 people_ _ _it only takes a few minutes thought to recycle and i found the best way is not to buy to many products already wrapped up.. i.e take a box to your local supermarket or farm shop_ _ _..fill it up without the bags_ _ _also use local suppliers and fishermen_ _ _Cant believe how many people buy pre packed fish from supermarkets when we have it fresh on our doordtep!!!

I think its practical and clean, you can always easily fit a chain and padlock to keep your bins connected to your house to prevent the kids nicking them and a simple wash out with a hosepipe or jet washer will keep them clean and tidy.

I dont have a garden that requires compost, so i am going to pay the on off GBP30 charge for the Brown bin which i can fill with garden and green waste , which at the moment i have to take down to the tip_ _ _.and what a hassle that is!!

I think Hasting have the right idea, my only negitive is that normal waste will take 2 weeks to collect_ _ _ however if we all recycle and use common sense, we can reduce waste and therefore save this dying planet_ _ _

i mean i went to football on saturday (leicester v Watford ) and even they are rcycling on the terraces_ _ _.if football can do it, why cant we?

We, that is, the general public have been conned. The recycling=Nice green citizen issue is a red herring. I resent doing the extra work recycling this that and the other. I also resent the possibility that we may end up paying extra to get rid of rubbish (chip and bin).
I resent it because most of the rubbish I get I don't want in the first place. Ridiculous amounts of packaging, inapropriate materials used for packaging. Wasted natural resources.
The reason that the government doesn't legislate against it is the market economy, big business and tax revenue dictates as usual. Packaging is big business, it makes money and it employs people. This generates taxes. The governments refusal to legislate against it creates more companies that make money disposing or recycling = more tax revenue. Further, if you can then con the public into paying to get rid of it_ _ __ _ __ _ _well I am almost speechless with the bare faced cheek of it.

The best thing to do is dump all the rubbish at Tescos, Asda or whichever before you take your shopping home. And dump all unwanted mail at the post office, kebab house or junk food shop. Then eventualy we may all be able to use one small bin per household emptied weekly.


I do currently recycle reluctantly.

We're being forced to pay the price if we have too much rubbish in our bins, yet the supermarkets clearly put far too much packaging on our food,games/DVD's etc, maybe if the Supermarkets were more careful with the way they packaged our food, we might not need all this control on how much rubbish we put in our bins.

the only sho[p i use is the co-op who are eco friendly_ _ _

i use the fishermen, local butcher and farm shop for my goods and using the same box to carry it in, i have had since i first went there_ _ _.

tesco's,azda etc etc are corperate knobshiners who are only interested in cash !!!!

it may look more expensive, but without the packing the local farmshops work out cheaper, it tastes right ( non of the shopper friendly dyes,additives and wax's used) and actually it is much better for this planet !!!

I agree with Bigchris,I too shop as "friendly " as I can,I do use a supermarket for somethings though.
I have always believed that this question of recycling should be lead from the top and not put all the onus on the already over burdened consumer.
As for the towns twin bin scheme,its a joke,I live in a two flat house and have been informed that we,in our area are not suitable for the scheme,so what good is it I ask.Of course,its another great way to squeeze even more money out of us.

Well personally_ _ _ so far, so good.
No problems with the twin bin scheme meself. The lady over the road from me seems to have got in a right pickle with it though!!

She made the huge mistake o not actually moving her bins onto the pavement in front o her house. Her bins sat just the other side o her wee garden fence, just 12 inches high . For all effect her bins were within 6 inches to her neighbours bins that got emptied, but for the sake o a 12 inch high barrier (that could easily be walked round from her driveway) her bins have not been emptied for 3 turns now.

At last she has moved her bins onto the pavement area, but she has built a large stash o full bin bags an i wonder how she will catch up with it now as the bin men wont take extra bags.

Maybe she will have to sneak round in the dead o night lifting bin lids to try an sneak an extra bag into.

We see eh_ _ _lol..i will let you know if i see.

lolol_ _ _ trouble is with people is that they spend more time complaining about the bins then taking the trouble to listen to the councils instructions about where and when to put out the bins..

personally i love the bins_ _ _it works really well and i am filling my recycling bin to the full each fortnight and half filling the normal one_ _ _

much easier and cleaner and i know people in other towns who would love to lose the blackbags and have bins like us..
