Well, I have had a look at the posts here with interest, I think people have to give it time and wait and see.

The reason I say this is that I have been part of a huge renewal area in a particularly deprived area of south london (Bellenden Renewal Area, Peckham SE15) trust me, you don't get much more deprived! >:) And I must say, that despite working very closely with all the renewal area team and artists involved I was still very sceptical - turd guilding comes to mind

BUT, 4 years or so on, I can only say I am wrong and it works; the area is positively thriving, the regeneration has attracted all sorts of new, independent shops to what were burned out shells, they seem to be managing, if not profiting from taking a chance on the area. The art works that were commissioned have attracted lots of visitors (which has shifted the place where there were 10 killings in 10 days a couple of years ago to somewhere that is recommended for a visit by more than one of hte broadsheets. Ther property prices have increased in comparision to neighbouring regions - and the council properties have become much more desirable.

We are looking to move to Hastings and have been for some time after totally abusing the hospitality of some very patient and generous friends that live on the outskirts of town. I am not a lovey,or even remotely arty, but can only report on what I have seen at first hand, which has turned my opinion around (albeit grudgingly). Hopefully jerwood will have a similar effect. 8)

Inner city deprivation has been tackled in many parts of London which no doubt has seen vast consequent improvements (from Brixton to the Docklands and Islinton and Notting Hill, etcetera) but I don't see an argument for applying the same ideas to Hastings Old Town

1. The Scale is completely different
2. There are no daily killings, drug wars or massive street crime
3. There is a big community spirit
4. Hastings Borough Council are rumoured to get paid for accomodating some of the people displaced from London Boroughs as a result of such 'gentrification'.
8)

I like the Jerwood and am looking forward to it opening. Having lived in Cornwall when they built the Tate in St Ives, it certainly made a difference to the image of Cornwall and increased the amount of visitors. It's now a busy destination all year round. Whether you consider that a good thing I don't know.

I certainly can't see it having a negative effect on the town. I don't know of any places in Britain that have been ruined by artists maybe you can illuminate me hanpet?

That reason is that it's the oldest part of the town, not that it must be preserved in the same state forever. The Jerwood is a welcome addition.

The problem is that the decisions to allow places like the Jerwood are made by people who don't even live in Hastings and the local views are arrogantly brushed aside.
Also it is to be seen as another encroachment onto the grounds once held sacred to the fishermen who have a historic connection that is slowly and surely being diminished along that stretch of the sea front.
Soon there mey be no more fishing fleet and then such developments will have won the day, the whole area will become an attraction to nothing in particular other than a name and a memory.
Sounds dramatic? well then look back at what has been happening over the last hundred years to that the whole stretch of beach, once held by the fishing community, which is now lost save for the space for a maximum of 12 working boats.

We went to the Seafood festival, Jerwood din't look busy, in fact, I couldn't see anyone in there. Now it's there I hope it works but I don't think it will.

I like the idea of an Art Gallery in Hastings but Jerwood is in the wrong place.

The gentrification of the old town is not a good idea. As it gets more upmarket the residents will start complaining about noisy pubs, scruffy nets and smelly fishing detritus on the beach_ _ __ _ _The local authority should be looking at ways of encouraging a larger fishing fleet/community but I can't see that happening.

I don't know the economics but surely there are not enopugh sustainable fish in the sea for a larger fleet?

As for the area being 'sacred', I don't reckon a coach park was more of a holy place than the Jerwood_ _ _

The Jerwood should do more to encourage tourists (and locals) in. (Events? Cheaper tickets? Parking discounts? Better opening hours? More interesting exhibitions? I don't know.) Then once the punters are at that end of town they will buy more fish and keep the fleet in business!

Hastings fishing fleet (like many other small fleets) is one of the most sustainable forms of fishing there is.

Thanks GK, that's very good to know. We'll definitely go on eating as much as we can then ;-)
