Re: Fernbank Maternity Home
I don't have any photos of the place but I was born there in 1952. I remember what it looked like and I believe it was demolished in the 1970s/early 80s. As you drove down Old London Road it was high up on the bank on the right, set back amongst some trees. I think the side you saw was the back or side of it because there was a big old black fire escape against the tall, squarish grey building. Not much help perhaps but it might conjure up a mental image at least!

there is / was a footpath that took you right by the old fernbank maternity hospital from old london road. I used to walk it every day for a few years to school at priory road. my mother gave birth to to my half brother and sister there, not sure when it closed but must have been around early 50's you would look at front left side as you went down old london road, it was set back on the right from the road.

Re: Fernbank Maternity Home
My two older children were both born at Fernbank 1972 and 1974.It was used by mothers who were under the care of their G.P. during their pregnancy.Previously it was a private hospital for mothers for their confinement. It was more like a cottage hospital and in those days you stayed in for 10 days. The steps are still there leading up from the pavement on Old London Road.
