136 All Saints Street. hastings
Re: 136 All Saints Street. hastings
Had a look at this number on Google Street View, very nice looking house, very much doubt if Mr George could afford it now, not on a painters salary..Had a look through my local directories and in 1896 no name of the resident is given but in the 1920s and 30's and up to 1939 it was occupied by Mr George.. Figg is an unusual name and there was a Figg who was landlord of the Duke of Cornwall in Post Office Passage in 1896..perhaps our local pub expert can tell us if there is a relationship..

Was 'Figg' your grandmother's maiden name ?
Did they marry in Hastings ?
There's a Mary, E, Figg, Hastings, born 1861 in the 1881 census
Another in Hastings born 1874, Ashenden, Buckingham
Another in Hastings born 1897 Oakwood, Surrey
I'm checking the 'Duke of Cornwall' possible connection.

See Relatives section,
The grandmothers name was Mary Elizabeth Figg
so it is most likely her..
It seems to me that this family were among those evacuated
during WW2 as there is no record of them after 1940..

The phone book lists two Figg's in Hastings and St Leonards and several Georges.

The Borough Petty Sessions record James Figg as landlord of the Duke of Cornwall public house from 1895-6. There doesn't seem to be any connection with All Saints Street but the census and other records need to be checked. Verina: have you contacted the Hastings and Rother Family History Group. ? They have info on the Figgs

Hi,
Your family, the Wenhams go back much further than that. They are/were an old established Hastings family at the Duke of Cornwall. I'll post the info for you.
Any old photos ?
