Please see my comments under the Rainbow Restaurant, regarding The Old Post Office Tea Rooms, Marine Court.

I've been a regular customer there but after being extremely rudely treated today, simply for going in for a cup of tea, I shan't be going again. I also find it expensive and mediocre - the cakes are dry and over-beaten, as they are tough.

Don't be fooled by the jolly window display; this "tea-room" is a humourless self-regarding piece of affected nonsense.

We went to the Love Cafe instead, which, eccentric and cliquey though it is, provides warm customer service - they look you in the eye and smile, and remember you from lat time, unlike the above - is reasonably priced, and the cakes are made by someone who knows what s/he's doing.

Jes your description made me laugh, it's spot on. I went to the post office tea rooms once, my partner had coffee and I had a mint tea they both tasted dreadful. How you get mint tea to taste bad I don't know. We like Love cafe although do feel a little outside the St Leonards scene when we go there. We also really like the Little Larder.

We really like Di Paola's on the front in Hastings, friendly owner and great Italian ice cream and sorbet and the coffees not bad either.

On the subject of rudeness - we went to the cafe on the promenade in Bexhill (can't remember the name, but it's actually right on the prom) and I was actually told off like a child for picking up a jar of wrapped lollipops for my son to choose from. I was actually quite gobsmacked by her rudeness.
In fact I've found them rude each time we've been there, a shame as it's v handy.

I think one of the best things about living here is the great choice of interesting, lovely independent cafes ALL of which are great and all of which are run by people working hard in a harsh ecomonic climate. When I see the Post Office Tea Rooms being singled out for some online personal slagging it makes my blood boil. Firstly, Ok I know this is a forum and you are allowed to express your opinion but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth to see a local business being bitched about in such an anonymous way. Secondly, I couldn't disagree more - the food is always excellent and sometimes exceptional. I think I've had some of the best meals I've had in recent years there and with unfailingly polite and warm service. I love going there.

It is always open to the owners of the "ALL lovely cafes" to defend themselves and promise better service in future
Ofcourse we don't want business destroyed by careless comments but if people have real issues then "all is fair in love and war"

Some places really need to take notice of comments and respond to accusations if they have an ounce of genuine commitment to service and standards expected by the public who are or potentially are regular customers
Usually the places in areas of high traffic flow can afford to be casual and always receive "fresh blood" so may be able to get away with sloppy standards
