Hi Paul

The bikers have been coming to Hastings on May Bank Holiday since the sixties. I think it all started in the mods and rockers days.

The parking to accommodate the bikes is specially permitted for the bank holiday only, you could guarantee that they would all get a ticket any other time of the year!

As for drink driving or riding, I am sure that would never be overlooked and the police do their fair share of stops. I guess there are exceptions to the rule but I have never heard of there being a problem with this.

Like the students, the bikers help the local economy. I bet fish and chips sales are best all year :o)

Hope that helps Paul.

Hi Paul

Being a biker for many years now I would like to give you some kind of reassurance, speaking on behalf of the majority of bikers but not all.

I always drink soft drinks when out on my bike, never alcohol. Other bikers sometimes drink alcohol free beers or lock their bikes up at their accomodation for the night, then go and have a few beers. The last thing most bikers want is to be banned and not make the next May Day.
As Marina pointed out, there is a special waiver on parking for the event which is good public relations and boosts our local economy, otherwise our council tax may creep up if bikers stopped attending.

Having run a large pub in Epping Forest with lots of bikers attending in the warmer months, I can tell you that the biggest sales were soft drinks where the profit margin is higher than alcohol.

I do hope you have not had problems with bikers, because that minority undo the good work of decent bikers who go on charity runs to raise money for good causes.

It has taken decades the shed the image of the Mods and Rockers clashes, and now the competition is to see who has made the best modifications to their bikes and not who can sink the most pints of Stella and still ride.

As a biker this is the best weekend of the year for me, although I do frown on the numb skulls who want to wheelie along the sea front, those folk need taking off the road before they take someone else off.

I had to reply to this thread because I dont want you to think we are just here to cause people annoyance or distress. Most bikers spend a lot of time and money on their machines, and like events where they can can show their bikes and enjoy the atmosphere, I am sorry if you did not enjoy the weekend as much as you would have liked but you cant please all the people all the time, so to speak.

I agree with Gaz, I remeber the days at epping forest and up on high beech! Most bikers now are like me and in their 40's and above. The wheelie twats are usually younger as you point out. The shame is that an innocent person usuallly has to suffer before they grow out of it. I was daft when I was young, had punch ups with the second generation of mods and the punks in Southend during the late seventies. It is part of life, The picture is always the same it is just the clothes and people that are different. Teds in the 50's rockers n mods in the 60's second generation Teds, Rockers and Mods and the skinheads, punks and rudeboys in the 70's etc etc. Take a good look at the bikers next time and see how many of them are silvere foxes_ _ __ _ _.

Hi, I used to be membership secretary for Hastings and District Motorcycle Club, and would meet up pretty much anywhere "bikers" were tolerated, finding better welcomes at the Black Horse, Telham and The Plough Inn, Crowhurst.
Many times we would all pile in and order mugs of coffee, Canada Dry, and other soft drinks, the landlords accepting that it was a better profit margin as he didn't have to give the brewery a "cut". In fact they loved it when we held Pool and Darts nights as they were quids in.

Many of our old club are still riding, myself, I returned to bikes two years ago, and ride a Honda CX500. I am also a registered nurse of some 28 yrs, I dye my hair blue/black with a vivid pink stripe! So what box do I fill?
I also have my own horse, does that make me a Toff? I have a tatt.
I think there is some confusion between day to day bikers/everyday Joe and the prejudices shown to Chapter members (Hells Angels). But do the charities turn away THEIR money they have raised from events such as Kent Custom Show/Bulldog Bash and so forth, because of who they are? No, because they are all human and they also cry at the plight of cancer stricken children and others, and raise millions through these events. The police have always maintained that to get the KCS beat is the easiest week going as its self policing, they just take over on public property when these guys have kicked out trouble makers and dealers.

We all bleed, we all hurt, a vast majority give blood, a vast majority contibute to charity, some are solicitors, bankers, nurses, mothers, fathers, wether we have tatts, piercings or long hair or wear our colours over the leathers, makes not a jot of difference. We are human.
