It is worth checking some of the old threads because there has been quite a lot of discussion recently about Hastings/St Leonards. Have you visited St L recently? It's changing all the time - for the good, lot of artists studios, antique shops, great cafes and restaurants. And some excellent free music lately at the Geccko bar. But relocating from Essex is a big change - maybe you should do a trip, walk around and get to know the area, decide what part you want to focus on for living in.

Rightmove is the best and biggest property website (buy or rentals) but the property itself is very variable - you need to be quite choosy and careful in order to find something that has been well-looked after.

But people here are very friendly and welcoming. A lot of "refugees" from London and all over really.
