The Bakery on the Corner

Postby Derek Jempson » Thu Dec 10, 2015 6:07 pm

Are there any of you who are old enough, and have lived locally long enough to remember the name of the bakery shop that once occupied the building on the western side of London Road at the junction with Grand Parade? At this time of year, the shop always had a magnificent Christmas window display, usually made of cake materials. One year it might have been a nativity scene and another year a winter snow scene. As a child, I can recall the excitement of visiting King's Road, illuminated throughout with decorations and then going on down London Road to look at the bakery shop display.

Are there any photo's Derek?
There is an Indian Restaurant on the corner (ground floor) now, and I believe the building above has recently been salvaged?

I might possibly have some photos of a Hastings Carnival procession that I took in the early to mid 60s in that area. I'll check through them. More recently, the building had scaffold up with nothing happening for what seemed like years and then suddenly, earlier this year, the renovation work was completed very quickly. The upper floors still seem to be unoccupied.

You mean the shop on the left of this old photo? It does look like an elaborate display. Shame we can't read the sign on it to get the name for you.

Yes, that's the one Geoff, although it probably wasn't a baker's shop at that time.

Found the photo, and it clearly shows the shop name (Borgeauds). I could have answered my own question, had I looked for the photo at first!

Looks like it was part of a chain and the following article gives some further info:

Interesting article Richard. I had completely forgotten about the Borgeauds premises in the Bohemia Road area, and I spent the first six years of my life near there.
