Finding Joan Day

Postby Georgie » Wed Jul 21, 2004 9:53 pm

Does anybody know of a private home 'The ladies training home' at Tackleway Hastings as I am trying to look into the background of my grandmother who would have attended there sometime between 1920-1932? She then went onto a C of E school in St Leonards. The school was for young ladies of single parentage, similar to an orphanage. Or perhaps someone may remember a very quiet/shy child, the only one with NO parents who attended this school. Would really appreciate any help as we have no records of her past other than her mother's name which was Ethel Day. As far as we know mygrandmother was born in April 1918.

Hello I am Joan Day's daughter. Joan also talked of a young girl called Beryl and one of the school govenors who was called Mrs Jones.I believe Mrs Jones used to take the girls to her house at Christmas time and hide present's around her house for them.If anybody knows where I could find records of the Training school please let me know.

Hi,
Have just found this site and I am very interested in your query.
My mother Mary Valentine Weiss was raised in the girls home in Tackleway and she would have been there at the same time as Joan Day,if fact,I believe mother mentioned her name at times when taking about her childhood.
Regrtfully, there are no records of the home,it would appear that as the home was run by private funds, when it closed the records were destroyed.
One of the benefactors were Lord and Lady Ebdom(not sure about the spelling).
I would be pleased to exchange information with anyone who has family connections to the home.

Do you have any further information on the school, correct name etc. I am going down to Hastings in a couple of months to scatter my nan's ashes and would like to try and so some searching while I'm there.
Thanks
Georgie

George,
the only other information I have been able to find are the records from the County Council which state the years, name of home and the different Matrons.
The home seems to have been opened in 1867 and was closed by 1948.Known as a girls training home the Matron was Miss May from 1930 onwards. There are no directories or records kept of the home. The correct address of the home was : East Hill Lodge,45 Tackleway,Hastings.

Hi Michael
My mother Joan did speak of a Mary, if she said she was a quiet and shy little blond girl. Also one of the children gave her a Teddybear but I can't remember what thye name was. Do you have any group photo's of your mother and the other children during their time at the Traing Home.

My mother was dark haired and quite a tall girl, this just goes to show how hard it is to trace girls from the home.Mother spoke of a little girl from London who's name I think was Libby or Lidier, she told of how this little girl would rule the other children in the nursery. One girl mother did keep in touch with also stayed as married in Hastings,I only knew her as Auntie Majorie.I think she was married to a councilor or solicitor.

Hi Michael
Last week I spoke to a lady who belongs to the St Clements and and All Saints Church ( I believe this is the church that the children were taken to every week). I explained that my mother did not have any known parents. She was born in a Workhouse in Hastings. She said the school govenors would take one parentless child from a workhouse and support her upbringing via their funds.I will be speaking to the rector this week as I and my two daughters will be taking mum's ashes to scatter in the churhyard in September and hopefully the rector will say a few words for us.If I find out any more information I will let you know.If I have time I will go through old photos in the shops there to see if they have any of the children from the Traing school.

Hello, I was very interested to read your entry in 2005 on being the daughter of Joan Day. We are trying to trace Joan Day and her birth date is 15th April 1918 although we are unable to find a birth entry in the public records for that year. Is this the birth date of your mother. Please get in touch. Regards Ian Richards
