I was born in a "medical and maternity hospital" in 1942 in St Leonards. Because of the war my mother had to arrange for
me to "live" in the home for about a year. The matron was Miss Brett(I have a picture of her holding me). I only have a
blurry copy of a photograph of the hospital - looks like a 3-story home. I am looking for old records but information
so far is this facility may have been demolished. Have no name. The only part of the address I can make out is "
______ park". Would be grateful for any information you can pass on. Thank you.

Re: maternity hospital - where is it?
Hi - not sure if there was a medical and maternity hospital further back, but my kids who are now 34 and 31 were born at Buchanan Hospital, St Leonards close to Springfield Road. But the maternity hospital has now been moved to the Conquest Hospital. Hope this is of help. I am a local writer, poet etc. Take care. Josie
Convent of St Vincent de Paul
Josie, I wonder if you have any knowledge of the convent/convalescent home run by the St Vincent de Paul nuns, and up on the hill in St.Leonards?
I am seeking photographic/ or local historical info. I lived in as a while as a child in the 50's. Regs, Lesley

Re: maternity hospital - where is it?
Don't know.. I too would have thought the maternity hosp would have been at the Buchanan, which was in Springfield Rd, however, St Helens had a hosp, which was originally connected to the workhouse and pharmacy across the road.. they had a childrens ward, and it was haunted by the grey (or was it white?) lady who had a child die there.. it was pulled down a couple of decades ago_ _ _ St Vincents is a convent theat's in St Leonards.. the next road down from West St Leonards Staion, and there was also a RC convent up the top of Filsham Road, which ceased to be a school somewhere around 1988 or so_ _ _
Re: maternity hospital - where is it?
all i can remember apart from buchanon is fernbank up old london road (its gone now) but i think the the little road the lead up to it is just below the petrol station, but i dont know what's up there
maternity hospital - where is it?
i think u mean the bucchanan its not there any more the only other maternity hospital in the area was fernbank maternity hospital in old london rd but both are now no more
Re: maternity hospital - where is it?
Just to add to other replies, the majority of the Buchanan has been pulled down, and many new houses built there. But the heart of the building remains, and I would love to be able to buy one of the refurbished dwellings. They are up for sale now.

I was born in thye Municipal Hospital in Frederick Road in 1942, that later became St. Helens Hospital, the main building is now demolished, The Buchanan Hospital was used for maternity until it closed when the Conquest Hospital opened, but in the 40's/50's it had other uses, I had my tonsils out there around 1952.

I was at this convalescent home from 1955 to 1957 or 1958. Can you send me any information about the place?
