Bottle alley

Postby Josephine Crawford » Sat Jul 23, 2005 11:01 pm

Does anyone remember Bottle Alley?
it ran from Hastings nearly to St Leonards on the beach.
I see no mention of it.

I grew up at 22 Wellington sq Hastings during ww11 and love to look at this site from California where I now live. amazing memories.

Yes Bottle alley was very different in many ways,I remember as a child trying to count all the different coloured glass pieces there were, also it was a wonderful place for seeing many different kinds of moths that were attracted to the lights from of the sea.

It's still there and desperately in need of a bit of TLC.

There is a snippet of history on this site that says

"The double-decker promenade that runs from Hastings Pier to Warrior Square, was built in the 1930's and is the only one of its kind in the country. The walls have mosaics created from broken glass and originally there were shutters to protect the walk from the rough seas."

If anyone is interested in more information on bottle alley I can research it further. Indeed, unfortunately now in need of a bit of tlc.

There's also a photo in the old picture gallery of the seafront before bottle alley was built. Not great quality but interesting none-the-less.
