George Street Back in the Sixties

Postby Bob Campbell » Fri Jan 13, 2006 11:37 pm

Is George Street now a pedestrian Mall?
My first job was as an apprentice electrician at Bikers Electrical in
George Street on the opposite side to the old pump house. Are they still
there?

cheers

Yes Bob,George street is now a pedestrian mall,I believe that Bikers is gone but Butlers Imporium is still there as is the Pump House and The Anchor which was one of my favourite pubs in the sixties, many an evening singing folk songs to anyone who could strum a guitar, happy days.

Bikers disappeared some years ago, Bob. I remember a Miss Biker of that family who was something in flower arranging in Hastings years ago. I can also remember the Pump House when it was derelict back in the fifties. It was virtually re-built. Cable's pram shop is another one I remember, now long gone, also the pie shop on the corner with High Street. They made some damn' good pies!
