Weissenberg Terrace,Wilmington Road

Postby patrick » Mon May 14, 2007 6:09 pm

Passing up Hoads Wood Road on my way to Ivy House on a Sunday and passing Wilmington Road I have wondered many a time how Weissenberg Terrace in Wilmington Road got its name..Was it changed because of anti-German feeling during WW1 ?..

Did you see the end house at the top of Wilmington Road? it has the date that it was built, and Weissenberg Terrace painted or engraved on it.

I did see the date engraved on the two houses, that sort of thing seems to have been not uncommon l in Victorian times but the name is so unusual and I have never seen it mentioned in any local history book..It could be that it is the name of the builder..I think that it was quite common in those days for a builder to build one or two or three houses and then another firm would continue along the road or terrace which could account for the many differing styles you may see along a street or road or terrace..
