This week's pub concern must be the 'Tubman' and it's newly painted front. It appears that the council have 'banned' the painting of this pub and landlord Paul Osmond has been asked to "take it down" or face a fine ! The council claim it is a form of advertising without planning permission.

The landlord and the artist need our (moral) support. I urge everybody to get down to the Tubman to show support. Also call in to 'Inspire', 36 Robertson Street, congratulate the artist Aaron Hosannah and sign the petition.

Also lobby the council and the council leader. Post your support here.

Hi David,

Terry has started a Tubman thread on the other forum, see_ _ _

With regard to the Albion above:-

Ross's Guide to Hastings for 1863 says " the landlord (of the Albion) has added the two adjoining houses" one "neatly fitted up as a smoking room".

In May I posted information about a previous landlord of the Crown, All Saints Street. His name was A.J.Littlejohn and in later life he was a survivor of the Titanic.

His grandson Phillip Littlejohn, is giving a talk about his grandfather and the Titanic at the Shipwreck Centre, Rock-a-Nore on September 18th. The talk will be illustrated with pictures of the wreck taken by Phillip on a recent dive.

Tickets are GBP10. Most likely a sell out.

Does anyone remember the Whitefriars, Priory Road ? I am trying to track down the last couple of landlords/ladies/barmaids or anybody else connected with the pub. Just remembering a name might help. Thanks.

HI Guys n' Gals. As I remember Sonny Harmer was landlord of the Plough just down the road, it is possible that he moved up to the "Friars" when Thelma Christmas, wife of the late and very much lamented John Christmas (dear me Dougal) sold up. The Whitefriars used to be a darts mecca with superleague teams based there. John also ran the Hastings and St Leonards darts league for many years. Hope this helps.

I remember John and Thelma when they had the Beaconsfield in the late 70's. Very fond memories.

Hi again. I also remember John and Thelma when they were at the Beac. It used to be a great pub. A few years and maybe landlords later, it was run by Dave and Joy Dormer. A nice couple. Can't believe that it is closed now, used to be a busy and lively local.

Thanks everyone.

We now have info on:-

Plough Sonny Harmer

W/friars John and Thelma Christmas ?

Beac John and Thelma Christmas late 70s
Dave and Joy Dormer

Any dates or approximate dates for these ?

I am still putting together a Hastings licensees register and it seems

that the records from 1972 have been lost ??? So all memories welcome.
