This was a proposed plan of St.Leonards, the center piece being Markwick terrace. Obviously never happened in it's entirety but this plan must have reached quite an advanced stage because the plan indicates that some of the proposed buildings were already let.
I can provide more detailed shots if anyone interested.
I've lived in Markwick terrace for 30yrs. A developer who did some work a few doors up gave it to me, where he got it I don't know. The developer has since disappeared, several people would probably like to know where he went.
The original may still reside at the planning office??
If you look the the terrace from a distance it becomes obvious that it was never finished, it isn't symmetrical and according to these plans it should be. It should also be longer. The rest of the plot in the terrace adjacent to the gardens is occupied by detached houses built at a later date. I have heard that this development halted due to financial problems..
I suspect that these plans were submited and passed and some building work had commenced but financial issues terminated the development.
The copy I have is 22" x 16" the original may be bigger?
some years ago I posted a question on the Markwick Family Genealogy forum and received this reply.
"The general concensus is that a James Markwick married a Mary Eversfield and her aunt left money to James as long as he changed his name to Eversfield. In the process of developing the Eversfield estate he named a row of houses Markwick Terrace and in front of them is a large private garden for the residents of the houses."
A lot of buildings are not shown. For example the Horse and Groom 1829, the (large) Warriors Gate 1833, (now the Post Office), the St Leonards Brewery at the back of Sheppard Street etc etc.
Also I thought Burton built a wall to separate St Leonards from 'St Leonards Without'. ie Central St Leonards. It ran across Norman Road and as I understand it behind the Nags Head and up Kenilworth road. Although the section across Norman Road was demolished around 1840 opening up the road, other sections were retained. I believe the garden wall of the Nags Head to be part of it.
As I said, my knowledge of this plan is virtualy non existant. My knowledge of St Leon is pretty sketchy too_ _ __ _ _..So your thoughts on this would be extremely interesting.
I had always assumed that the houses in the botom right (with little detail and lighter in colour) were exixting buildings and not a part of the proposal. Assumptions are quite often wrong though.
