Hertfordshire Convalescent Home, St Leonards

Anyone know where this was?

I am trying to research a bit on it for the history pages but can't find the location anywhere online. Was it in West Hill Road with the other convalescent homes?

Hi Geoff,
I found a few pictures of it and this_ _ _ "There is a booklet The history of the Hertfordshire Sea-side Convalescent Home at St Leonards-on-sea by Gordon M Frizelle, published in about 1964, which. There is copies in Hastings Library"
It does look like it could have been on West Hill Road , but look at http://www.hertfordshire-genealogy.co.u ... t-home.htm for more info and the National Archive has loads of info , residents, annual accounts etc_ _ _.

Hi Bob, good to see you on the forum.

I have had a look at that page and got some info from it for the history but it doesn't give the address.

I am going to pop in the library at the weekend and see if they still have the booklet. Fingers crossed!

Okay, I have visited the library today. They have two copies of the booklet in their archive. One of which is available to borrow_ _ _ yay happy reading.

Now i'm even more confused as to the location as it says Silchester Road. There is nowhere in Silchester Road that looks remotely like the old photos I have seen of this place, and aparently it only stopped being used as a convelescent home in 1982 so relatively recent.

Someone must remember it?

Wasn't it next to the old West Hill Hospital that ran TB testing clinics, I know I used to have to go there regularly for Heaf tests as my grandad was a "live" TB patient. Mum used to say it was a "Ladies" hospital, and there was a wee shop up the road. And a big brown horse in the field next to the railway tunnel. My Dad and his mate ran the model steam railway down in the field off Essenden Road in the 70's so remember the walk well.

Upon reading further through the booklet they expanded from Silchester Road in to a larger property which they describe as being "on the cliffs near the Bo-peep station looking towards the sea".

So still not an exact location but i'm guessing either West Hill Road (as I first thought) or behind the Bo-peep station where St Saviours is.

I am going for West Hill Road in my history text unless anyone tells me different.

The model steam railway sounds interesting. How big was it and was it popular? Any photos?

My Wife reckons that it became the Queen Charlottes convalecsent (West Hill road) hospital which closed in the 90's and was then demolished. My wife has been with the NHS locally since the late 70's.

She also seems to remember 3 biulding in adjacent plots. Eversfield Chest Hospital, Queen Charlottes and a Childrens home. (not sure of the order)_ _ _.all definitely in West Hill Road.

I have attached a photo (click for enlargement and maximise the window) in which you can see there are what looks like two empty plots. I was under the impression the NCH (national childrens home) used to be there but now i'm wondering if the herts convalescent home may have occupied one of them.

What do you think?

It's clearly a pic of the building in Geoffs pic that's still standing and doesn't look like the building in the original pic.
